Ducks, Geese and Swans on an Ontario Pond

It's been a while since I've posted because I've been working overseas and interstate for most of the last 8 weeks. I did manage to get out with the camera on a few weekends between work commitments so here's the first go.

I work for a company whose head office is in Kitchener, Ontario in Canada. One of the many delights of Kitchener is Queen Victoria Park that has a human-made lake that attracts a range of birds. An early morning walk I found a few common waterfowl.

Mostly foreigners...

Mallard, Queen Victoria Park, Kitchener, Ontario
Mute Swan, Queen Victoria Park, Kitchener, Ontario

but a few locals...

Canada Goose, Queen Victoria Park, Kitchener, Ontario

The biggest challenge photographing the ducks, geese and swans on the lake is that they are used to being fed (despite the signs all over the place saying "Don't feed the birds") so they are constantly coming towards you when they see you near the water's edge.

A few of the rodent locals added to the entertainment

  1. I just hope that somehow we can encourage Kitchener motorists to watch carefully when driving for geese, ducks, squirrels, etc. on our roadways and SLOW DOWN! These critters don't know the rules of the road and whether they are healthy or possibly injured, too many are getting killed. Today, a goose accidentally hit a hydro line on Queen's Blvd and fell to the road. He perked up and seemed lively but obviously had a leg injury. My husband and I decided to turn around to see if we could help him and just as we were backing out of a driveway to do so, along came a stupid non-caring driver and finished him off! The poor thing might have been saved. We saw the goose from at least 3 car-lengths back - they are large - how do you just drive into something lso big without a darn care in the world - smarten up idiots and preserve our nature!

Apologies for the inconvenience but I have had to turn on word verification to avoid spam (I was getting 10-20 a week)
